Designer Mirjam Grote Gansey has realised a great number of theatre- opera- dance-, film- and televisionproductions in The Netherlands and abroad. She designed the sets and sometimes costumes as well for classical theatre-repertory such as Racine’s Phedre and Andromaque, Ibsen’s When we dead awaken, The lady from the sea and Ghosts, The Cherryorchard and The three sisters by Tjechov, and the famous Dutch play Gysbrecht van Aemstel by Vondel. But also for modern repertory such as Big and Small by Botho Strauss and a great number of other contemporary productions. She designed for main dance companies in the Netherlands and worked as an art-director for well known films in Holland and Belgium.
She designed sets and costumes for many operas: Orfeo ed Euridice (von Gluck) for De Nederlandse Opera and Deutsches National Theatre. Mahagonny (Weill), Der Fliegende Holländer (Wagner), Rusalka (Dvorak), Creon (Huub Kerstens), Pelléas et Mélisande (Debussy) Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni Mozart, Händels Alcina (in Tokio, Japan) and Orlando and many others.
She designed great opening shows, as well as theatrical artworks, installations and interiors.
At the prestigious Quadrennial in Prague Mirjam Grote Gansey wonthe gold medal for the best individual designer of the world. She was praised for the depth, clarity and variety in her work.
Besides designing she taught scenography at several art academies in the Netherlands and abroad. She has been artistic leader of scenography on MFA masterlevel at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen. She is and has been board member of several theatrical organisations, as well as member of several artistic commitees including opera production houses, she hosts several scenographic initiatives in the Netherlands, co-founded scenographical platforms and has organised International Scenographic Symposia with the Dutch Theatre Institute.
